Community Energy

Despite there being no provincial policies in place to encourage community power through co-operative ownership, Spark Your Power has emerged as Alberta’s first member-owned retail renewable power co-operative. It offers customers the opportunity to purchase locally generated Green Energy Offsets from small generators in Alberta.

In addition, several municipalities have implemented incentive programs to facilitate the development of solar energy technologies in their communities:

  • City of Edmonton: Short-term pilot program offering limited number of rebates for homeowners and business owners to install solar generating capacity on their homes or businesses.
  • Starland County: Starland Solar Initiative provides residents with an installation grant of 50¢ per watt up to a maximum of $5,000.
  • Town of Banff: Solar PV Production Incentive encourages property owners to install solar PV systems by providing production-based top-up payments over a period of 7 years.
