The majority of community scale power in Manitoba consists of geothermal installations that serve clusters of buildings in community or district systems. These include projects in rural municipalities such as Île-des-Chênes, First Nations communities such as the Peguis and Fisher River Nations, and residential housing units such as the Bridgewater Forest Neighbourhood.
In terms of renewable electricity community initiatives, there is currently one endeavor underway. The rural-based Elton Energy Co-operative is pursuing the development of a community-owned wind project 3-5 MW in capacity. Because Manitoba does not have a formal community power program, the co-op is engaging with the provincial government and Manitoba Hydro to develop one, as well as working to develop an investment model for community power projects going forward.
