Although PEI has developed a substantial amount of wind power, the province is lagging in community energy development. The province does have a successful example of a municipal renewable energy initiative in the City of Summerside. In 2009, the city commissioned a 12 MW wind farm. The wind farm is 100% owned by the city and supplies 27 per cent of Summerside’s energy needs. The project was funded through $22 million in federal and provincial funding from the Building Canada Fund and the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund, as well as revenues from gasoline taxes[i].
